A friend of mine and his suggested that I contact Philip Johnson for advice since he was a pivotal figure on the New York scene. I was completely unknown to him and therefore reluctant to contact the great man - but I did, and to my great surprise he returned my call. His accessibility and total absence of self-importance impressed me. Anyone wanting some advice just had to call, and he would talk to them ..."
